Ryan Jenkins is originally from Pennsylvania, where he attended college at West Chester University. After earning a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1999, he was named Director of Bands at Pocomoke High School in Pocomoke, Maryland. He taught there for four years before moving to Texas in 2003. Mr. Jenkins started his time in Texas as the Tom Bean Middle School director for a year. He then became the Director of Bands for Tom Bean High School where he taught for two years. In 2006, he became Director of Bands at Sherman High School where he is in his 18th year with the Bearcats.
Mr. Jenkins has performed with elite groups at every educational level, most notably as a member of the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. He marched two years with the Cadets and won a world championship with them in 1998.
Under his direction, the Sherman marching band has had consistent success at all levels of UIL contests. Sherman has received 17 straight 1st division ratings at Region contests and has also been the Area B champion. They have qualified for the 5A Texas State Marching Contest three times and were finalists twice.
The Sherman marching band has also had success at many independent contests with many different judging systems. They have been named grand champion and won numerous caption awards at these competitions. Mr. Jenkins’ bands have also competed at many Bands of America contests including the Atlanta and San Antonio Super Regionals and the Dallas and Midland Regionals.
Mr. Jenkins has judged at Region marching contests as well as Area contests at the 6A, 4A, and 2A levels. He has worked with many experts in the field of marching band including: David Starnes, Jeremy Spicer, Gerry Miller, Michael Klesch, JD Shaw, Darryl Pemberton, Jon Bilby, Will Pitts, Brandon Smith, Geoffrey Sperling, and Casey Snead.
He gives marching band and concert band clinics to groups of all levels as well as serving as a judge for numerous marching and concert band contests across the state. Mr. Jenkins is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association.
He lives in Sherman, TX with his wife Kesha and daughter Callie.
